Toll fraud otherwise known as phone hacking or phreaking is a hugely profitable activity for organised criminals. Hackers hijack your phone system and create a huge phone bill full of premium rate calls to just about any location.
Fraudsters can strike any system, regardless of whether you have an analogue, digital or IP-based system. Usually, they strike out of hours on public holidays, evenings or at weekends when the likelihood of detection is lower, often companies don’t realise they have been breached until the phone bill arrives.
A single attack typically costs a business thousands of pounds and as a worst-case scenario result in bankruptcy as toll fraud is ultimately the businesses responsibility.
